The states of transportation in many metropolises are getting worse with the economic growth. To relieve the pressure of urban transportation, we should devote our major efforts to developing mass transit and optimize the passenger traffic structure. To develop the mass transit, we should scientifically draw up the transit planning, reasonably assign transit network and heighten the level of transit administration with modern technologies. The traditional technology of transit planning has many defects. The development of geography information technology brings a hope for the improvement of the transit planning.A series of methods of the transit planning are proposed in this dissertation with the geography information technology.Data models are the bases of an appliance geography information system. After analyzing fundamental requirements of transit planning to data models, this dissertation researched road network data model, route data model, bus stop data model and transit network data model.Assigning transit network is the centre of transit planning. After researching the current technology of assigning transit network, a new technology of assigning a transit network is proposed which can be operated easily. At the same time, a set of methods of handling the transit entities in a geography information system is proposed, such as defining a transit node, assigning a route, adjusting a transit network, etc. The appraisal of the transit network is the guarantee of a high qualitative transit planning. This dissertation had deeply researched the computing methods of several common transit appraising indexes in a geography information system, such as the density of transit network, the bus stop coverage, the nonlinear coefficient of a bus route, the duplication coefficient of bus routes and the average distance of bus stops.In addition, this dissertation also made a research of other technologies, such as transportation investigation method with geography information system, the administration method of transit planning data, the structure of predicting system of the transit traffic demand, etc.Finally, a part of the methods which were proposed in this dissertation is used in the Foshan city transit planning and worked well.
