Measuring liquid displacement and environment temperature are very important fortrivial living and industrial process. Traditional measurements are inefficient anduneconomical because of working in a simulative way. With the development ofmicroelectronic and computer technology, digital instruments appear in the recent years.They use microprocessor as central processing unit, communicate with each other bytransferring digital signal and target at network environment applications. According to our design, the intelligent digital instrument is made of four parts:measuring unit, simulative unit, digital controlling unit and PC. In measuring unit,magnetostrictive material completes the conversion of displacement and pulse signal.Simulative unit is used to produce the pulse and process the stress wave. Digital control unitis powered by a single-chip microprocessor. It receives messages from PC, decodes themessages and controls data measuring. On the other hand, it sends measured data to PC. InPC, data samples are converted to physical measure, which is then shown in the screen,recorded in memory and sent to disk and printer. Simultaneously, external keyboard is usedto manage and control the whole system. The software and hardware parts of the intelligent digital measuring instrument areillustrated in this paper. Its application for network based on communication technology isalso discussed. The main contents are listed as follows: the architecture and function ofintelligent magnetostrictive displacement and temperature measuring system; the principle ofmagnetostrictive material working; the PSPICE analysis of simulative unit; the developmentof digital unit; the software structure and the main functional modules; the test of hardwareand software along with the result analysis. Under our endeavor for one year, the intelligent digital instrument has gone into theprobationership with some characteristics such as wide-measure ranges, high precision,better-antijamming ability and friendly interactive interface etc.
