WAMS (Wide Area Measurement System) is developed to meet the requirements of synchronization in time and wide area in space, and it is a very important tool for improving the security of power systems. The main contents of this paper are as follows:1. A new Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS) with a new type of Phase Measurement Unit (PMU) is developed in this paper. This measurement unit can be applied in engineering easily and have high precision. The rotor angle is calculated in real-time by integrating the rotor's speed, which is measured by the tachometer accurately. When the new method is applied in steam turbo-generator and hydraulic generator, it will not make any vibration. The high accuracy time base, which is provided by the GPS receiver, is utilized in the measurement.2. The WAMS's control center, including it's design principium, excellence and shortcoming, are introduced in this paper. The control center has been put in use in Henan Electric Power System (HNEPC) to superintend a WAMS for period of time, and it can meet the requirements of power network real time monitoring very well.3. The method and model of static security analysis based on WAMS are introduced. The simulation indicates the exactitude and availability of the method.
