Architecture resides in details. The soul of architecture is how we select and hence integrate materials to form spaces. Modern architecture, which was born out of Occident classical architecture, was historically rebellious from its very beginning, advocating concise and functional architectural forms with its brand slogan of form follows function. Palingenesis exists everywhere, however, with no exception of the architectural world. The common fault of lacking milk of human kindness in modern architecture is calling for people's consciousness and attention to exquisite design, or architectural details, to be specific.The essay starts with an all-round analysis of architectural detailing in terms of its definition, attributes and functions. Following it summarizes the parts in an architecture where details exist, as well as the detailing principles. The main body of the essay contributes to some methods of architectural detail design from such aspects as structure, material, color, scale, tectonic and form. Chapter 4 discusses new forms of architectural detail in the information era.Finally, this paper analyses the causes of the lack of exquisite design based on the real situation of the architectural design market in China. While the paper considers it's high time that the recent tendency of valuing scheme design more than technical design be changed, it also puts forward corresponding solutions to the situation.
