A Coordinate Measuring Machine(CMM) is a kind of widely used, highly automated measuring machine with high accuracy and efficiency. The mainly used field are advanced manufacture and science research. The CMM collects the points' coordinates of the geometric elements instead of the elements themselves. According to some algorithms and assessment rules, the data processing software can turn the coordinates into dimension, form and position error. The CMM based on precise mechanism integrates the application of optics, electronics and computer technology. The major parts of CMM are: main body, electrical system, probe system and software.The project is sponsored by an enterprise to develop a specialized multidimensional coordinate measuring machine for the size-measuring of the I-steel crystallization device. Actually it is a CMM and has the common function. The paper introduces the development of the specialized multidimensional CMM. After summarizing the mechanical structure, the selection and application of the electrical system, the software of the measuring machine are emphasized in the paper. The software includes the modeling, probe qualification, coordinates-setting, design of motion control system, path-planning of measurement and so on.The mechanical part and electric part of the specialized multidimensional coordinate measuring machine have been completed on the whole. Though the software system is still in developing, the simulation has been achieved on the foundation of VC++.
