A mobile roof is a new type of architecture in which part of, or all of the entire roof can be moved or retracted within a short period of time so that the building can be used with the roof both in an open state or in a closed state. In the process of engineering design, it includes some important problem of how to design retractable roof structure and retractable mechanical system. A structure with a retractable roof has many parts whose features are different than those of conventional immobile structures. In fact, the issues cannot be handled by existing standards for mechanical design to ensure the safety and serviceability of such structural systems. Hence, there is a need ,which aims towards preparation of safety standards for predictable problems and preparation of design data and recommendations, for design a new mobile roof based on the state-of-the-art progress for such existing architecture. The study plan and main content are based on the Yellow Dragon Stadium project which is firstly designed about retractable mechanical system in China.This paper is summarized as follows:1. The development and the experiences of the actual examples abroad are introduced, such as the current status of the retractable roof systems in each retraction method. This thesis put forward project of retractable mechanical system for Yellow Dragon Stadium;2. The whole design process and some considerations are discussed from architecture, structure and mechanism in detail. It contains some design concepts, general guidelines or mechanical system design along with some driving methods of retractable roof structures of Yellow Dragon Stadium;3. Design and calculate driving system of Yellow Dragon Stadium based on Komatsu Dome and Yokote Dome Theater in Japan;4. According to analysis the wind load, the automotive locking device is designed for anchor function;5. In order to avoid derailment the adjusting mechanism is designed with considering structure distortion under different temperature condition;6. Design and choose suitable electric, cable and control system , clamp ,buffer etc for Yellow Dragon Stadium;7. It contains some actual malfunction examples of retractable roofs abroad, and some safety measures are researched in relevant design for Yellow Dragon Stadium.
