The Underwater Acoustic Target System (UATS), which is one of the most significant components of the Underwater Acoustic Proving Ground (UAPG), is laden with a most important function during the proving procedure of a underwater weapon. As the analog front end of the UATS' dry parts, the UATS preprocessor functions as an indispensable bridge joining the wet parts to the signal processor. From an engineering point of view, this paper makes a full exposition of the design idea and concrete realization of the UATS preprocessor, that is, the analog front end of the UATS.The UATS preprocessor is composed of three modules, including an analog receiver, a driving circuit as well as a fathoming circuit.Thereinto, the analog receiver, the main body of the UATS preprocessor, conditions the output signals of the receiving transducer, which are amplified and filtered. And the driving circuit implements the low-pass filtering of the D/A converter's output signals and offers the result to the power amplifier circuit as its input. In addition, the fathoming circuit acquires the depth information of the underwater electronic equipment cabin to ensure a relatively convenient way to adjust and recover the underwater parts of the system. Both the driving circuit and the fathoming circuit are also essential to the UATS.The whole system has passed through the laboratorial experiment, the tank experiment and the lake experiment. The results of the lake experiment have primarily shown that the design of the UATS preprocessor is reasonable, reliable as well as correct.Nevertheless, it is the sea experiment that will finally decide whether the design of the UATS as well as that of the UATS preprocessor is successful or not.
