Renewal Of Public Space Inside Urban Traditional Residential Blocks In China

The public space inside urban residential blocks is a important part of urban publicspace system. It is the place where residents get along with their lives. Traditionalresidential block is a special type of urban residential block. The public space inside ithas the common functions such as activity space, communicating space and green space.In addition, the character of it's physical form such as texture, structure, place and sight,as well as the traditional living model give the public space special cultural value andthe potential economic value. But in our country currently, the public space inside urbanresidential block also has many problems, for example, lack of activity space and publicfacilities, bad environmental quality, and so on. These problems have obstructed theimprovement of people's living quality.Currently, the renewals of old cities in China are progressing abroad. Among themthere are many projects about traditional residential blocks. If we follow right principles,adopt proper strategies and use smart techniques, rejecting negative aspects and holdingpositive aspects, we can realize the integrated values of public space inside traditionalresidential block, including social value, economic value, cultural value and ecologicalvalue. The major idea of this study is to educe principles, strategies and techniques ofthe renewal of public space inside residential block.After studying the physical form of the public space inside residential block, thepaper analyses the factors affecting the apparent characters. Then, based on thedeveloping trend of these factors, the paper deduces the principles and strategies ofrenewal which instruct the design of the space form. By this way, the renewal is on thefoundationof respecting history and being adapted to today's demands.There are six main chapter of the paper.In chapter one the theme of study, renewal of public space inside traditionalresidential block, is brought forward. Then the related concepts are explained, the scopeof the study is defined, and the research methods are also chosen. Finally, the frame ofthe study is establishedIn chapter two and three, the related theories and practices of urban public space andurban renewal are discussed. And their relations with renewal of public space insideresidential block are clarified.In chapter four the characters of public space form inside traditional residentialblocks in different history periods and different zones are discussed. Then the factorsaffecting the characters are analyzed. In chapter five the background of the renewal in China is analyzed. The essence ofrenewal is to achieve the extensive values of public space inside blocks. Then theprinciples of renewal, the choices of renewal model, the design methods of public spaceand the measures to insure success of renewal are brought forward.
