Since the Vortex flowmeter is available on the market, it finds wide use because of its simple structure, no movable components, high reliability, long life, high accuracy, and wide measuring range. However, most of the vortex flowmeters nowadays adopt the AC power supply mode. It makes field installation more difficult and liable to introduce power interference. So it is necessary to develop a low-power and high anti-interferenced vortex flowmeter powered by the battery.At present, GSM network has covered the whole country. On account of its high privacy, anti-interference ability, reliability and easy development, the accuracy and stability of data transmission are guaranteed. GSM provides integrated communication protocol to both sides so that the development works for the users become easier on the communication platform. As a basic business of GSM network, the SMS (Short Message Service) has already absorbed attention and favor of more users because of its high speed and relatively low price. At the same time, it also offers a new means for long-distance data transmission.The use environment of vortex flowmeter is complicated. So data transmission with RS232 becomes unsuitable for users' needs gradually. With incomparable advantages of SMS over RS232, it becomes more and more welcome to use SMS for the transmission of small-streamed data.This paper introduces the principle and characteristics of SMS, the hardware and software design of vortex flowmeter.The single-chiped micro-computer(SCM) system is the core of hardware design. In order to reduce power consumption, an ultra-low-powered MSP430 typed SCM manufactured by TI company is chosen as the system controller. The whole control procedure adopts MSP430 C language to program in the IAR Embedded System development environment. In order to shorten development period, the special GSM Modem is adopted to transmit data.
