China is the second largest energy consumer in the world. The improvement of energy efficiency has been recognized in China as an issue of strategic importance in China's development. Among large energy consumers in China, motors and motor systems utilize almost half of the electricity generated accounting. The average efficiency of small and medium AC motors in China is 3-5% lower than the minimal efficiency motor standards in the US at present. The potential saving of electricity from motors and motor systems in China is about 15000 MW per year. Just as its name implies, a High Efficiency Motor produces the same shaft output power but consumes less electrical input power than a Standard Efficiency Motor. So improving the efficiency of electric motors, replacing now-using common motors by High Efficiency Motors can save energy, and reduce operating costs. The efficiency value is the most important parameter to distinguish a high efficiency motor, so the efficiency testing method and equipment for high efficiency motors are much more complex and strict than common motors. This paper mainly studied how to establish a set of automatic test system for High Efficiency Motors, in order to gain an accurate testing method, which can provide more information of input, output and losses at same time. After consulting three major testing standards that are widely used throughout the industry, linked with Chinese testing methodology for "The evaluating value of energy conservation for motors", this paper brings forward its particular viewpoint. Then it gives a set of self-designed, systematic and convenient efficiency testing method of High Efficiency Motors. At the present time, it usually uses the torque-measuring instrument to measure the output torque in High Efficiency Motors efficiency test. But exchanging the sensors for various measurements should result in increasing the cost. This paper calculates the air-gap torque through testing the input current and voltage, and then accomplishes the efficiency test of High Efficiency Motors. Furthermore, it provides the redesigned testing circuit, and recounted the idea of designing the hardware, the process of building an idiographic hardware circuit, anddebugging in the course of test, etc. Certainly, it lists test data, results, results analysis and quantitative appraisement for this system. The experiment results accord with the High Efficiency Motors testing criterion, and show that this method is easy-using , cost less, and it is valuable for application.
