Wood is an ancient construction material. However, timber structure is disappearing gradually in China because of historical reasons. With the economy developing, there are a variety of demands for building structure. Now wood structure buildings are mainly of light wood frame construction. China has large areas of speeded-up wood. Developing in wood science and technology makes it applicable to civil engineering. This article discusses mainly the general principles of glued laminated timber structure. It includes: (1) Brief introduction about the materials of glued laminated timber structure on the processing techniques, load resistance principles, the main influencing factors of material qualities. (2) Brief introduction about the history of structure designing method and features of timber structure designing in China code. It also introduces and compares the two main methods, ASD and LRFD. (3) Confirming Post-Beam frame as the basic type of glued laminated timber structure according to the Glulam physical mechanic features, our Building Modular Coordination Standard and structure type of foreign timber structure. (4) Following the basic rules of lateral design, vertical design and connection design, combined with the features of Glulam and wood-based structure-use panel, to study the load resistance principles and proper design of elements and connections. (5) Discussing the non-structure elements such as fire prevention, insulation and decay prevention. The development of Glued laminated timber structure can benefits both economically and socially. This article will help with the production, design and construction of glued laminated timber structure.
