Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA), as the key part of the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC), is mainly consisted of proton exchange membrane, electrocatalyst layer, and gas diffusion layer. Preparation and optimization of MEA are the pivotal techniques for PEMFC. The MEA's structure and fabrication technology not only determine the performance of PEMFC, but also affect on reducing cost, improving power density and energy density, and accelerating their commercialization. To meet the demand of the development of PEMFC, two new electrocatalyst components of MEA has been examined, and a new fabrication method of MEA has been developed in this thesis. As for the electrocatalyst formula, several surfactants were examined, one surfactant was selected for dispering electrocatalyst and another was selected as pore forming agent. The contents of two components in catalyst slurry are 3.5% and 0.7%, respectively. The membrane electrode assembly( MEA), prepared with the new formula, has stable catalyst layer on membrane and showed no less electrochemical performance than that made with much ethylene glycol (EG) formula. As for the MEA, based on the previous lab work, two new fabrication methods of direct pasting technique have been developed in this thesis. Double-side-directly-pasting method was chosen by comparing each fabricating process and the test of electrochemical performance of resulting MEA. The platinum loading of electrode fabricated by this method is 0.30mg · cm-2. The effects of the components of catalyst layer, electrode structure and operation condition on the PEMFC performance were evaluated by means of voltage-current density plot.
