To develop such an ideal platform for electronic control engine, a set of ECU hardware-in-loop simulation system (ECU HILSS) is designed and discussed in detail in this paper. As an up-to-date applied technique, ECU HILSS can be regarded as a tool with integrated software and hardware, which is adaptive for real-time simulation. During debugging, the HILSS is connected to ECU directly as a virtual engine, receiving the control from the ECU and sending out the homologous running message of the engine, which reduce the tests and cost of all kinds. In this paper, the principle of Computer Real-time Simulation System (CRTSS) for electronic control engine is discussed. Two set of plan for ECU HILSS both at home and aboard are analyzed and verified. A sort of ECU HILSS for electronic control engine which based on existing technology is accomplished. The designed system has good versatility and expansibility. The hardware framework of this system is analyzed. The PC as a host for the system platform facilitated the system development. The real time dynamic model simulation system was developed based on the Matlab/xPC Target for electronic control diesel. The Matlab/xPC Target supports two connection and communication protocols between the host PC and the target PC: serial and network. The HILSS is completely constructed, which is a tightly coupled multi-processor system composed of two standards PC and a serial cable. The Matlab/xPC Target provide friendly graphical user interface, which developed to sample the data and display the curve on the host PC platform, and the data can be saved for the future use. User can control the simulation using the xPC Target remote control tool. The dynamic models affect the workability and the reliability of the whole real-time simulation system. This thesis presents an electronic control engine dynamic mean value engine model(MVEM), including fuel and fuel film, manifold air mass flow, manifold air pressure, air/fuel ratio, indicated thermal efficiency, friction loss, spark advance angle and engine dynamics. The electronic control system model consists of sensors and actuators sub-models. The engine model is studied by using the dynamic simulation tool-Matlab /Simulink and some simulation results are provided. At the end of this paper, the adjustment and test with the ECU HILSS in the real-time simulation was made, the HILSS performances under some transient operating conditions are analyzed, which lead to the conclusion that the HILSS works well, and after being further perfected it can be put into more practical use.
