Traffic simulation technology has been developing rapidly and been used widely abroad, and there are many traffic simulators being developed successfully. In China, however, it was becoming attentive only in recent years, and the research work on traffic simulation is confined to the very academic institutions. Traffic simulation plays a very important role in transportation management and control, and becomes one of the significant fields of intelligent transportation system.Arterial routes are of supreme importance in urban transportation. If the traffic problems of arterial routes were solved, the ones of the whole city would be settled very easily. In view of this, this thesis studies on the microscopic traffic flow in urban arterial routes. At first, it systematically analyses the components of urban arterial route network and their traffic characteristics, and the microscopic driving behavior mode as well as the mathematic model of vehicles; Secondly, by applying system simulation technology and object-oriented technology, this thesis makes a deep research on the method of traffic flow microscopic simulation on an object-oriented basis, and on the computer programming processes as well. Furthermore, the object library of the traffic flow microscopic simulation environment discussed herein is established, the framework of the urban arterial route traffic flow microscopic simulation systematically devised, and the main functions implemented through C++ programming. Finally, this thesis expounds the bright future and shed lights on the emphases on future studying. The simulation experiment results show that the simulation system can display the vehicles' driving behavior both on a microscopic and on a macroscopic basis. The system proves available.
