The Evolution & Connotational Explanation Of Architectural Space Issues In The Impact Of Information Technology

Being one of the most influencing factors of modern science and technology, Information Technology (IT) is penetrating with every domain of the society. Its'wide-ranging application makes the traditional architectural space consisting of roofs, grounds and walls surrender. The development of the architectural space comes into request on different levels due to the irregular space with curved surfaces and streamline shapes and the interactive space with virtual reality and expanded reality integrated. Meanwhile, the Cyberspace created by VRML, HTML, GUI and other image techniques is broad and boundless. Therefore, the architectural space doesn't produce perpetuity or make rules since the old rules don't keep up with the virtual existence of the architectural space any more. According to the new characteristics and phenomena emerging in the IT era, the author tries to explore an essential issue of architecture---the development and the evolution of the architectural space, and then discuss it with the information age concerned. This paper includes five parts: Firstly, the author briefly summarizes the foreign classical theories of architectural space and analyzes the value and effect of science and technology during the evolution of architectural space, and then indicates that some modern opinions need be brought out. Secondly, the author provides the research framework of architectural space in the new background in terms of theories and methods, and describes the research conception and technological feasibility. Thirdly, by comparing the nature, the characteristics, and their causes of the architectural space in the new era with it in the past, the author analyzes the novel evolutionary mechanism of the architectural space.. Fourthly, by analyzing the new phenomena, new characteristics of the architectural space in the new era, the author emphasizes the depth and the range of the influence during the development of the architectural space which is promoted by IT. Finally, the author gives an original explanation from the connotation and denotation of the architectural space, and analyzes the effect if this new notion is brought to the architectural field. The original points of this paper are that it uses the IT era—extensive application of IT as a starting point, analyzes the evolution of the architectural space from the aspects of humanities and technology, and then gives an original explanation concerning its connotation and denotation.
