First, this paper introduces systematically the theories and research home and abroad about the spatial location of retail stores. Then, the author makes a case study of 78 large retail stores in Wuhan, each of which with an area of more than 5000 sq. meters in Wuhan during 2004. At the first section of the case study, the author makes a macro description of the spatial location of these 78 retail stores and their evolvement from 1995 to 2004. At the second section, population distribution and road distribution are analyzed to find out the impacts of the two factors on the spatial location of retail stores, this process are analyzed from population center,population density,road characters,road network density and transportation accessibility five aspects. Finally, the author generalizes some market centres from these 78 retail stores and makes a quantity study of the service level and market penetration of each centre, studies market areas of these centres at the level of Wuhan and gives an estimation of the spatial location of retail stores in Wuhan in the future.
