The key problem of the modification for Yellow River is sediment. The primarily reason is the lack of water and the much of the sediment, and ununiformity of the water and the sediment. Building Xiaolangdi project on Yellow River, it changes imbalance of the water and the sediment into harmony by adjusting store and sluice of the reservoir, taking the sediment into the ocean, reducing the sediment in the riverway. The cubage of Xiaolangdi Reservoir is 126.5 hundred million m , including 75.5 hundred million m~3 for the sediment and 10.5 hundred million m3 for adjusting water and sediment. It can reduce the silt in the riverway by adjusting the water and the sediment for operation of 5 years .This paper systematically describes the characteristics of water and sediment of Yellow River, and the process and the experience of the modification for Yellow River, and the main achievement for China, and the way of defending silt for Xiaolangdi Reservoir, and analyses and summarizes the state of the silt and the operation of the adjusting water and sediment for the primeval operation of Xiaolangdi Reservoir, and discusses the operation for the long-term and the prolonging sued time of Xiaolangdi Reservoir. At the end, this paper makes a comprehensive comments, points out the existing problems to be solved, the experiences to summarize and the lessons to draw on, and proposes the corresponsive measures to be taken and recommendations. Its output will provide important basis for operation of Xiaolangdi Reservoir and reducing silt of the Yellow River riverway.
