Rear axle is one of the most important parts of automobile. The function is increasing torque from driving shaft or gear-box directly, then distribute it to left and right wheels which have the differential ability. And the rear axle have to support the vertical force, lognitudinal force, horizontal force and their moments between road and frame or body. Its quality and performance will affect the security, economic, and comfort of automobile.The article analyzes internal and external research status and developing trend. Points out some important technique in rear axle design on the base of operation mechanism, like vehicle running smoothness and passing ability, the application of noise reduction, parts standardization, components universalness, products systematization and so on. Explains rear axle fundamental and system analysis, introduces influence of the pinion and gear on reducing noise. According to design principle of economy, application, comfort, safety and analysis comparison, decide the structure types of main reductor assembly, differential assembly, axle housing and half shaft. The CM8 rear axle structure design and strength calculation applies theory analysis results. Summarizes all questions, discriminance and solution in actual operation. The Sichuan Jianan Industry Co., Ltd. was the first to build mold and FEA with software to rear axle ( CM8 rear axle ), reduceddeveloping risk, improved product quality, shortened developing period. All tests proved, the design of CM8 rear axle is reasonable completely.Through the question for study, advance rear axle design level, ensure the economic, comfort, safety and trustiness of automobile, will bring a certain social and economic benefits.
