As important technical indexes, reliability and maintainability are critical factors for enterprise to survive in the ever competitive market. Devices demonstrate different failure modes in its whole life cycle, which lead to maintenance activities of these devices. Reliability centered maintenance (RCM) is more and more widely used due to its advanced quality and practical utility. Therefore, it is significant to investigate maintenance decision making under different failure modes accordingly in order to keep the reliability of devices. This paper conducted Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) and Failure Tree Analysis (FTA) of some main parts of diesel engines on the basis of actual production and usage situation in Yuchai machinery Co. Ltd. After that, preventive maintenance strategies of units and complex parts (such as system or assembly) are researched under the concept of incomplete maintenance and mathematical models are established for analysis and application. The introduction of Age Reduction Factor and Failure Acceleration Factor in the model against the uncertain factors in devices operation and maintenance process well reflects the practical operational situation in the device whole life cycle. At last, the proposed model is optimized to better adapt to the real situation of maintenance operation. As a widely used maintenance strategy in practical application, Condition-based Maintenance (CBM) is analyzed in this paper. In addition, this paper discussed application of Proportional Hazard Model (PHM) on CBM in cooperation with some important parameters in the working process of diesel engines. Multi-objective optimization model based on condition monitoring with minimum maintenance cost and maximum availability is constructed. Since Condition-based Maintenance and Preventive Maintenance are mutual complement, they can be applied well in practical maintenance activities of diesel engines.Along with the large amount of maintenance practices, maintenance decision making models will be optimized and get closer to the reality. Maintenance plays an important role in keeping reliability and lengthening the life cycle of devices, which reflects its great commercial value.
