As a part of city public space, the publicity of waterfront open space of the Great Canal in downtown can improve the value of the Great Canal. With the transformation of city function and the development of transportation, shipping, as the main function of the canal is on the decline.This makes the canal "the river at back of the city" .The waterfront lacks open space and the current open spaces are also in need of activity. When the Great Canal facing the chance of regeneration, the research on how to improve publicity of Great Canal is very important. The thesis tries to give investigations on the current situation and supply some solutions in order to enhance the publicity.The thesis has six chapters.The first chapter explorees reasons to select waterfront open space of the Great Canal as case study .The sceond chapter introduces the background of waterfront open space of the Great Canal.The third chapter identifies "publicity" through the relations among users, spaces and activities, analyses four factors which infect the publicity of waterfront open spaces, and finally summarizes two ways to enhance the publicity from the angles of site character and current uses. Based on these two ways, the forth chapter gives general analyses on the waterfront open spaces in Gongshu District and Xiacheng district, and offers a case comparison between the "Miyuqiao" and Canal Cultural Square ,then concludes the lack of publicity characters.The fifth chapter concluds the reasonable development pattern of waterfront public space in downtown, as well as some strategies used in the research on urban design of waterfront in Jianggan District. The last chapter draws a conclusion.
