The thesis, with the urban renewal in Shenzhen as a background, seeking a way of harmonious development in the fast-developing cities, discusses the achievements and limitations of the urban renewal in Shenzhen and its future directions. The thesis focuses on the following research issues:1) Reviewing the history of urban renewal in Shenzhen. The thesis describes the beginning and developing of urban renewal activities in Shenzhen, analyzes the characteristics and problems in its different stages, and summarizes trends in the activities.2) Changes in urban renewal research of Shenzhen: The consideration of urban renewal research of Shenzhen is mainly reflected from two sides: One is the government departments, who launch research on urban renewal before issuing relevant government policies and technical regulations, the contents of which reflect the view of the government departments or even the whole society. The other is planning companies, who do research on urban renewal as technical means when working on planning projects. Thus the above two respects are analyzed with emphasis in the thesis, and some typical projects are chosen for an objective view of technical level and thinking of urban renewal research in different stages. And the performance of the policies and planning projects are finally summarized.3) The trends in the urban renewal study of Shenzhen: Through drawing from the domestic and international experience of research and practice, and according to the characteristics of urban renewal of Shenzhen, the thesis discusses trends of urban renewal research of Shenzhen, proposes the objectives, technical means and implementation trends of urban renewal, and on this basis, gives some suggestions on planning and policy research.
