The Design Of Flowing Space Through Manipulation Of Architectural Surface

In architecture, the terms of architectural surface and space seems different, but there is some inseparability between them. So the paper reveals the relationships of the manipulation of surface and the creating of flowing space in architecture in the states of independence of surface and autonomy of surface.At the manipulations of surface for creating of space, the author discusses the surface ontological elements and the surface expressive elements. For the former, the author divided the surface into static surface and dynamic surface. The static surface refers the surface that creates flowing space through "transparence", "breaking" and "continuum". The dynamic surface refers the surface which has dynamic shapes, and forms flowing space by "folding" and "topology". For the later, the essay would focus on the textures and aesthetics character on surface. Through the expressive elements of surface, we can create a flowing space from inner to outer.By analyzing the relationships between the manipulation of surface and the creating of flowing space, the paper explores a new way for understanding architecture and some design methods for creating flowing space.
