The air preheater is one of the most widely used facility to save energy in power plant.The spindle of 22# air preheater in Tianjin Panshan power plant was fractured after running inhigh temperature condition for 3.8x104 hours. With the super FEM analysis softwareANSYS,this paper analyzed the stress field of the spindle, and drew the conclusion of thespindle fracture. It could guide the running of the similar preheaters. At first, the static stressanalysis was proceeded, it proved that the spindle was safe under normal static stress.Through the analysis of instant impulsive load on the spindle, it was found that when thevalue of impulsive load on up-flange reached some degree, the maximum stress on up-filletwould reach its allowable stress,then resulted in the fatigue fracture. According to the factworking condition of preheater and the calculation results of the limited-unit, the conclusionis drew: the primary cause to the spindle fracture of 22# preheater is, under long-termadequate alternating stress ,the crack comes into being and extends in spindle shoulder of thespindle bottom, and this leads to fatigue fracture. Furthermore,a modification project aboutthe spindle of air preheater is put forward,in which the rationality and feasibility are discussed.
