The power supply system of EAST can give rise to immense reactive power and harmonic when it operates, which leads to the voltage fluctuation and waveform distortion, does harm to the safety of the power system and the normal operation of EAST and other devices. So it is of great benefit and significance to study the reactive power compensation and harmonic filter (RPC/HF) of EAST.The strategy of the RPC/HF of EAST is investigated in this paper, as well as the parameters definition. The parallel and serial resonance between passive filter devices and the power system is demonstrated. The transient is emulated numerically. The reasonableness of parameters design is verified. Manifold protective equipments are installed in order to resist the inrush current and over-voltage resulting from the frequent operation of vacuum switches in passive filters. The protective effect is emulated numerically, and the feasibility is demonstrated. This thesis also studies the control and protection arithmetic, which is realized by means of the programmable logic controller (PLC). Based on the software of Visual Basic, the communication platform is founded between the PC and the PLC, micro-computer protective devices. As a useful tool for operators, this medium realizes the function of the remote measurement, information transfer and control. The property of being stable, credible and real-time of the control system has been proved by the operation of the RPC/HF. In the case of more than 100 times operation of vacuum switches, there is no record of the re-strike and over-voltage phenomena arising. The inrush current is limited within twice of the rated current of the capacitor. With the operation of RPC/HF, the total harmonic distortion of the grid voltage in 10KV bus bar can be decreased from 15 percent to 4 percent, when the EAST pulsed load is applied.
