The selection of energy dissipation type is an important one for release works design. It is safe and economical to select different suitable energy dissipation types for different release works. In this paper various energy dissipation types for overflow dam in Baishi reservoir have been studied by using hydraulic model tests, including common energy dissipation of ski-jump type, common broad tail pier plus plain bucket, irregular broad tail pier plus plain bucket and so on. It is found that the energy dissipation of irregular broad tail pier plus plain bucket type is the best for Baishi reservoir. It is a new type of energy dissipation which different from the common types. Based on the experimental results, the characteristics of energy dissipation of irregular broad tail piers have been analyzed. A suitable layout of the energy dissipation of irregular broad tail pier plus plain bucket for Baishi reservoir has been proposed.
