With the work application change and improvement, it gradually emerged that the previous ZL40/50 power train configuration was humdrum and out-of-date. It's very practical and meaningful for improving the traction performance and vehicle speed to study the application condition and the Engine's output characteristic under varying load, research on the coupling properties between torque converter and Engine. It's valuable to develop new power train system for wheel loader. In this paper, a method is established to optimum design to wheel end structure of drive axle, analyze work condition features and the Engine out performance under varying loads, research the common work characteristic between the Engine and the torque converter. A kind of power-shift transmission is developed which has 4-forward gears and 4-reverse gears, more detailed calculation and the choice of main parameter are introduced in the paper. Based on vehicle parameters of ZL50 wheel loader and new power train, lug forces and the machine speeds of every gears are calculated and figure out the traction-speed curve. In order to verify the correct and consistent with the calculation and design, several experiments are done including torque converter performance experiment, hydraulic transmission performance experiment, vehicle lug performance test. From these test, got the original parameter of torque converter and basic characteristics of the transmission. Based on ZL50 wheel loader machine parameters and new power train, max lug force and the highest speed are proceeded. vehicle traction performance curve. As a result, the wheel loader gets superior lug capability and the higher vehicle speed, it can work efficiently and run faster, achieve the design purpose.
