Vertical traffic means - stairs is an important part of modern buildings. Besides vertical traffic means, curvilinear stairs can enrich space construction distribution and have good result on ornament of building. At present, the most commonly used curvilinear stairs is circular stairs and the type of curvilinear is single. Design method of circular stairs is ripe, so hardly using other curvilinear stairs enrich construction space.For providing more curvilinear form, enriching construction shape, enhancing building effect and space aesthetic feeling, perfecting the theory of stairs design, this paper advances using the parabolic stairs. The general principle on structural design of parabolic stairs is derived, and corresponding program is written in Visual C++ programming language for the purpose of the convenient application of the principle to engineering design. A comparative analysis is done between the results from the method of calculation in this paper and Ansys software, which proves the considerable accuracy in stress data drawn from the method in this paper. Comparison between the distributive laws of stress of circular stairs and of parabolic stairs is also made. Considering the variations in shape of parabola stairs and in story-high of stairs affecting stress, the rule of influence exerted by above variations is concluded by the detailed analysis of comparison. The more simplified formula is given by simplify symmetrical parabolic stairs in the further study. It is valuable and helpful for the structure design.
