This paper is supported by two road design projects from JiLin Provincial Highway Survey and Design Institute. The paper makes an application study of two important phases of 3D Highway Design, field terrain survey and design. Submit to the standards of different stage of 3D Highway Design, the paper aims to assess and analyze the precision of DEMs constructed under different data acquisition methods, different survey instruments and different sampling intervals. Some proposals for DEM data acquisition of 3D Highway Design are given and a 3D perspective system was presented also.In the actual progress of data acquisition, we chose different terrain conditions (plain, hill and mountain areas), different survey instrument (RTK, Total Station and leveling instrument) and different sampling intervals (10m, 20m, 30m). A thorough DEM precision assess and analysis was carried out in order to test the reliability and horizontal and vertical precision of RTK-Data-Acquisition-Method under the condition of different terrain, different satellite and different sampling intervals.A 3D Highway and Landscape Perspective System and a 3D Highway Auto-modeling System that are compatible with highway design data (transect, vertical section), highway service data (3DMAX) and ambient data (BMP, JPEG) are developed.
