After the last of the 1990's people had paid attention to the energy resuming and environmental protection. So a new industry named "green lighting" came into being. The energy-saving electronic ballast got more attention. At the same time, the dimmable electronic ballast could save the energy to supreme limit, so at present it has been the research and development direction in the field of electronic ballasts. It has complex frame, less dimming range, no pre-heat function and less protection in traditional ballast. So a phase-control dimmable electronic ballast based on IR21592 is proposed. Firstly, the configuration and operation characteristics of the normal fluorescent lamp are discussed. Secondly, operation principle and structure of electronic ballast are introduced. Circuits and characters of EMI used in electronic ballast are presented. And, topology and principle of inverter and resonant circuit are introduced, major circuit topology based on CLASS-D & series and parallel resonance circuit is confirmed. Then dimming principle and character of electronic ballast are introduced in this paper. Thirdly advantages and disadvantages of PPFC circuits used in electronic ballast are presented. And then topologies and characters of three Boost-APPFC circuits are emphases. Fourthly, the design of dimmable electronic ballast based on MC34262 and IR21592 is provided. And circuit of each part and selection of parameter are keystones. Finally, all parameter of circuit, the experimental result and analysis are given. Draw a conclusion: power factor of this ballast is more than 0.99, and range of dimming can be from 1% to 100%.
