In the winter, when temperature in ice cover is increased, there will generate athermal expansion. If there is a restriction on the edge of the cover, there will bethermal stress in it, accordingly the cover will perform a pressure on the restriction. Insome situation, the stress is large enough to threaten the safety of the structure.Thermal stress calculation in ice cover is a nonlinear problem, this includes edgeconditions nonlinearity, ice specific heat and conductivity nonlinearity, and ice elasticmodulus and linear thermal expansivity nonlinearity. This work deal with nonlinearsolution of the temperature and thermal stress field by the finite element method: Firstly, using finite element techniques combined with differencing method tocalculate the temperature distribution within the ice layer;Secondly, using the ice creep model to calculate the thermal stress within the icelayer; Finally, comparing the result with the test date and proved the method iseffective.
