The main contents of this article are as follows: first, the history of traditional culture exchange between china and Japan.;second, the contrast on their different national characteristics and attitudes toward the western thoughts on architecture designing;third, in modern days, the different understanding of Chinese and Japanese architects to the express of nationalizing and the corresponding ways they use to express. From the different national characters in china and Japan, the cultures, religions and aesthetic senses which have deep effects on the characters are contrasted with each other. The relations and characteristics of Chinese and Japanese traditional architectural styles are expounded, too. Furthermore, by contrasting the different attitudes of the two countries toward the western thoughts on architecture designing and their current situations, I think the nationalizing of architecture designingshould be based on our tradition. Thinking more about our historic unity and coherence is necessary together with keeping coherence with the local living environment. Colors and materials should be also used with respect of the local architectural traditions. Meanwhile the local living manners and traditional custom should be thought when designing some architecture in order to making it merge into the local environmental history, and combining the modern sense with the national traditions and local characteristics.By contrasting the courses of Chinese and Japanese architectural nationalizing, it is thought that opening to the thoughts of western architecture designing is a stimulation and power to our course of architectural nationalizing. The foreign culture has an effect on structure-dismissing and structure-combining, so the new architectural culture can be made from the combination of learning foreign experiences and enhancing our native traditional culture. On the other side, pursuing the diversified architectural language is an effective way in helping us out of the difficult position of poor creativity. In short, comprehending or individualizing, facing west or pursuing ancientry are the appearances that are apparently contrary to each other, but containing the historic requirements and pushing the cultural development. Our traditional culture has a long history and distinctive nationalcharacteristics. In architecture, we have some special senses: strong family concept, human-centered concept, separate handling of pattern-keeping and casual making, doctrine of the mean, nature advocating and intuition valuing, etc. By contrasting with the Japanese course of architectural nationalizing, it is believed, basing on fully understanding of traditional architectural culture and combining flexibly using of high techs and new materials, our designers can easily make some creations when facing the world with high speed, fast rhythm and daily-decreasing differences between areas. As a result their works will correspondingly have the traditional native spirits. So we should make a revolution in our thoughts of designing, find out our national essences, and use them in our creations and designs that are made in modern ways. This is a good way for modern individualizing design. The real task of architecture is creation. The so-called "inheriting in creating" stresses on the creation. Insisting on the national tradition doesn't mean looking backward. We should develop with the modern technology and create diversified patterns of architecture in the light of our national characteristics in order to be affirmed by the world. That is the object of architectural nationalizing, too.The contrasts in this article about Chinese and Japanese cultural backgrounds, developing courses, and current situations, are helpful for the modern designers to recognize our national characteristics, and findthe directions and positions of themselves, so that the improvements will be made. That has active meaning to our nation and to the world culture.
