This is a verge of a new period, a cusp between 20th and 21st century. As the tendencies of globalisation and the consequences of World Wide Web start to take their effects throughout the world, information and media are now processed at a higher rate. New culture patterns are generated within politics, economics, social context, and even urban conditions. There are impacts made upon every discipline, including architect, urban planning, sign design and so on. It is time when designers themselves have to re-examine their design process andmethodology. In recent years, there is an emergency of design------research iswhat is needed! The design process as research itself (required by design) , the contribution of its result to the development of arguments and theories. The thesis discusses about the street sign systems of Pudong new developed area. Now we are in the "Age of Sign". Signs provide us a completely new communication way. It has become a handy catchword used without the risk of severe consequences across a wide range of professional disciplines. And the design of street sign systems is an increasing important area of applied design. More than ever before, visual designers just need to design logos, design posters, design cards, design books and so on. But now information-transmit design has become an important part to visual designers, including street sign systems. The street signs offer a much-needed guide to the users, showing how the designers plan and design systems of street signs and other visual data in the built environment. Why visual designers should consider environmental factors? Because it has a deep relationship between signs and environment. We are conscious of the environment through "signs" at least on the "consciousness level". In order words, there is no environment which does not have signs, and there could not possibly be signs not connected with the environment. At any rate, our environment, such as squares and streets, is nothing more than space embracing us as "sign communication" intersects in a complex manner withinthe space. This is exactly the "scene", a word which has been used frequently in recent years. So we should hold the relationship between signs and environment before starting street signs design. To create a suitable street signs system for Pudong new developed area, let the users -grasp the Pudong streets' environment quickly, the Visual designers have to consider viatic, environmental, cultural and aesthetic factors in order to meet the needs of clients and users. They also should research visual street signs, such as light, form, color and movement, from the outside or use symbols such as clues in order to distinguish, recognize, judge and evaluate the environment as information. So, up-to-date visual, designers should provide an invaluable source of reference between signs and environment, between sensibility and logos, between science and aesthetics. They should master variety fields of knowledge. Sometimes they should even work in groups. Only through advanced and international design ways can create a suitable street signs system for Pudong new developed area. The emphases of this thesis are to discuss variety factors and methods to design the street signs system. Advanced investigation ways, advanced analysis ways, important elements of street signs will be discussed. Then at last, we will combine three actual cases of street signs systems to research the street signs system deeply.
