Tailing dam is a special manual controlled structure for tailing depositing built with tailing materials. The anti-seismic design of tailing dam mainly includes liquefaction evaluation and stability analysis. FEM method is a priority method at present with parameters of tailing tested in laboratory or in situ first. However, with the limitation of test condition and the complexity of computation, this method is difficult in mastery, spread and application for engineers. Therefore, it's necessary to put forward a suitable, simple and convenient method for anti-seismic design of tailing dam. In this thesis, a comparison of the anti-seismic criterion of tailing dam between PRC and Japan was made. Analysis of advantages and disadvantages of each criterion was also done. Based on the two criteria and combined with research conclusions of earth-filled dam, a suitable, simple and convenient method for anti-seismic design of tailing dam was presented.The thesis is divided into three parts. Firstly, a comparison between Chapter 23, anti-seismic computation for tailing dam in 《Design Code for Anti-seismic of Special Structures (GB 50191-1993)》 (shortened for 93 Code) of China and 《Construction Standard and Statement of Ballast Depositing Site》 (shortened for Japan Standard) was made. The characteristic of the two criteria was investigated from design idea, computation method and principle.Secondly, pilot calculation against several engineering cases were proceeded used the two criteria above, including earthquake response analysis, liquefaction evaluation and dynamic stability analysis. Compared with FEM method, problems of computation method and parameters definition in the two criteria was researched.Finally, based on analysis above, a suitable, simple and convenient method for anti-seismic design of tailing dam was presented. Parameters( such as amplification coefficient of acceleration of top of the dam, distribution coefficient of acceleration of dam) used in the simplified method were determined by statistic analysis way after calculating a series tailing dam with various height, tailing material and earthquake wave. The precision of calculation is high and the results can provide references to anti-seismic design of tailing dam in the future.
