Investigation, Planting Design And Utilization Of Flower Borders In Hangzhou Landscape Area

Flower border, as an excellent style for planting design, shows its compositive function for planting in urban space and improves the artistic level for landscape architecture. Being natural, diversified and continuable landscaping construction, it is important and meaningful to make clear to promote the designing level of flower border. Thus, the systematic researches on flower border will indicate the academic significance and practical value as well. The main results were as follow.1. Based on the difference of concepts between flower border and other planting styles for annuals and perennials, the definition and the classifications of flower border were discussed.2. The four historical stages in European landscaping were summarized, such as initial stage, developing stage, active stage, and developed stage. All of these stages were demonstrated by the typical examples with ancient European Gardens or outstanding works by distinguished designers.3. Having been investigating flower borders in Hangzhou Landscape area for more than one year, 188 species of ornamental plants were concluded, which belong to 62 families. Among these species, 40 for annuals and biennial, 89 perennials, 47 for flowering shrubs, and 12 species are ornamental grasses. Concerned about the adaptability for local environment and the sight impression, 79 well-behaved species were introduced.4. With the chromatology analysis such as the colorific characteristics, psychology and actives, the use of color in flower borders were indicated. Drafting designs or photos of the three cases were showed in detail, for discussion of the main points of flower borders which display unitary or multicolor styles, approach and techniques of the planting design and so on.5. From the aspects of proportion, arrangement, layout and otherwise principles, thepaper cited the vivid cases in West Lake or traditional works in British garden in illustration of its productions which are the choice for the plants, the approach and method for the design of the dimensional sight.6. The general research on the feature of the four seasons was carried out to educe the truth that the Mixed Flower border is the perfect form and choosing right plants is as important as design tact in flower border. Also 5 mathods were discussed to probe into the season scenery by 3 typical instances.7. Some problems and their resolvents were put forward by the investigation and the utilization of flower borders in West Lake landscape Area. And the sustainable landscaping construction in flower border was discussed with its predominance of the diversity, popularity, benefit and significance. Further more, the prospective future of the flower border applied in modern landscape architecture were also illustrated.
