Flower border is a new application type for landscape plants used in city greenland of Shanghai area in recent years. It simulated natural landscapes of various kinds of flowering plants by artistic design, which made a difference between the traditional and planar bedding style. Based on the investigation of flower border for more than one year, the plants selection and its landscape utilization were studied. The paper supplied academic and practical principles for diversification of plant varieties, variations of scene along with seasonal changes, and giving priority on colors to show diversification of landscapes. The main results were as follow.1. The classification, utilization styles and landscaping design for flower border were theoretical discussed, even though it has very limited materials about the related researches.2. The applied area for flower border in Shanghai has been reached 22398 m2. Flower border mainly consisted of perennial, also included the flowering shrubs, bulb flowers or annual and biennial flowers. The characteristics of flower border included laying emphasis on view of flowers and compatible with leaves, with crude cultivation and conservation. The selection of plants complied with the principles of fitting in with the local environmental conditions.3. By the investigation of the plants used in the flower borders in more than ten parks in Shanghai, the results showed that there are more than 130 landscape plants had been used. They are belong to 44 families and about 85 genus, which are 116 species for herbaceous, 10 shrubs and 7 vines. Perennials are most widely used in flower border, and common species especially involved in genus of Compositae, Liliaceae, Iridaceae, Labiatae, Gramineae and Crassulaceae.
