The Research On Freeway-Interchange Landscape Design

In contemporary China, a host of freeway grade-separated junctions have emerged on the transportation arteries and expressways. This unique form of bridges immensely enhances transportation efficiency as well as creates fresh landscape synthesizing strength and elegance. As an academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, Mr. Peng Yigang aptly observed,"A city against the backdrop of freeway interchanges is empowered to explore its cultural and landscaping potential to the full."Of all the freeway junctions, interchanges are the single most pervasive and powerful type. Yet on the other hand, research about the landscape design around freeway interchanges has been so far insufficient in China. Therefore, research on this form of junctions by architects is of profound practical and academic value.Based on probing into the existing theories and experiences upon architectural esthetics and landscape design, this paper synthesizes outcomes from a provincial-level specialized project and numerous field visits, thereby analyzing freeway-interchange landscape design in-depth.The first chapter introduces related basic concepts and background information, such as the categorization of freeway interchanges, relevant rules and regulations and the developments in freeway-interchange landscape design. The second and third chapters are concerned with the esthetic characteristics of freeway-interchange landscape design and a series of specific design techniques. To support his arguments and theories, the author cites numerous domestic and overseas examples and integrates his first-hand experience with such designs.
