The interchange is an important part of the highway, it has spatial many layers which can change direction. As a vital point of highway, the interchange has these functions such as converting and controlling the traffic flow. The interchange is also an important content in the highway network planning, the reasonable layout of the interchange benefit a lot. It can develop the network function, as well as guarantee traffic flow continuously. It also benefited to increase network reliability, promoting the development etc.The interchange is the main tie for the highway to link the external world. Whether the overall arrangement is reasonable or the program is feasible has much to do with the social effects and economic benefits. Particularly during the construction of mountain areas' highway, the project scale may be enlarged resulting of raising the overall investment, if the design is unreasonable with the limit of topography.Firstly, combining with the features of the interchange, this paper describes general principles to be observed in planning, type selecting and arranging interchanges and major factors to be taken into consideration in positioning. Secondly, according to general design principle, technical criterion and design method of interchange, starting with traffic volume analysis and considering the actual terrain, the type selection, arrangement principle, design standard of interchanges and the design of interchange in detail is expounded during the construction of mountain areas' highway; Also this paper gives several representative the interchange for reference in design. Simultaneity, Basing on the characteristics of the geological conditions of mountainous areas, issues relating to the route selection, plane and profile, arrangement of structure and environmental protection etc. in interchange design in mountainous areas are put forward in this paper, and suggestions are given aiming at the issues easily ignored in interchange design in mountainous areas. Finally, brief introduction is given to the design outline of ramp nose and speed-change lane. Thereby these provide theoretic base for the design of this interchange engineering. Some design experience being summarized can be referenced by other researchers.
