Chinese, Greek and West Asian garden systems, i.e. Chinese Classical Garden, Western Traditional Garden and West Asian Garden, are the three main systems in the history of the world's gardening, mentioned by British gardener G A. Jellicoe in the address of the 4th Conference of International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) in Vienna, 1954. Ultimately, no matter following which classification, the Eastern Natural Garden with Chinese Garden as the representation and the Western Formal Garden with French Garden as the representation are classified into the two main systems. Especially in modern times, Chinese and Western gardens have been in the leading positions globally.Both the Chinese and Western gardens are indispensable treasures for the whole culture of human, making the culture even more abundant with positive factors. Landscape, as a result of the social development of both substance and spirit, presents and makes up a type of culture. The pattern and quality of the landscape reflects the lifestyle, living standard and taste of the society, while the format reflecting the inherent culture of the landscape, a result of the culture and thoughts of the society. As the extension of the culture, landscape also presents the features of the certain folk culture. According to the history, we can see that the Chinese concept "harmoniousness between human and nature" was in favor of the sustainable economy, while the western technical methods promoting the economic development. The landscape designers in changing China, facing the rapid development of the landscape industry and the unceasing impacts of ideas and concepts from the west, should improve their theory levels and establish their own awareness.The residential landscape is most closely linked to the living of people, so it is being influenced by the folk culture. The landscape should reflect the folk features of the certain nations. The ideal living environment is not only a single design issue, but a "regional design", not only a dream of our people, but the ideality of the whole humanity. As the cultural communication deepening, it is the inevitable way integrating the Chinese concept "harmoniousness between human and nature" and the western technical method.Starting from the Chinese and western traditional gardens, this study systematically contrasts and analyzes the gardens and traditional living environments between China and the west, presenting the difference, characteristics and relationships between them. Chinese garden and its traditional living environment reflected the "abstract" aesthetic consciousness and ideal of Chinese people, while the western gardens and their modern landscape reflecting the "realistic" consciousness and ideal.
