Walking space is the most popularity place in residential area for its openness and sharing, and it is an important standard for weighting life, landscape and environment quality in residential area. Because of the walking space is a compound space which including many kinds of activities like transportation, trade, leisure, social contact and so on , it have obvious affects on many kinds of basic activities of inhabitants. This article hoped that we can find the suitable ways in planning and designing of walking space of our country and communities.The understanding and assurance of people's demand is always to be the important issues in the urban planning and residential area planning. The subject of residential area activity is people whom has the right to participate in the planning of their own residential area , walking space of residential area should reflect the psychology and care of the behavior to people. A successful walking space design cannot be able to work out merely depends upon the inspiration of designers , it needs an cognition process of objective factors and the real demands of inhabitants.The author discusses the feature,principle and the contents of the designation of pedestrian space. There are also some measures on road planning in residential areas to ensure the safety of residents, according to our country's actual situation. It also points out the pedestrian traffic should still be the subject of residential traffic system, though the fast growing of private cars. Neither distributary nor coexistence of man and vehicle should be regarded as the only way on road system planning in residential areas, which is actually a well-achieved balance between the traffic safety and reasonable land use, and different safety standards should be applied to different areas.
