This paper is based on suburbanization of China urban residence and low-density developing situation in Shanghai suburb. It defines and classifies current suburban low-density houses and living areas, and the environmental characteristic and spatial combination pattern in suburban low-density areas are also detailed, explaining the significance of street space environment on overall living conditions. The thesis generalizes the constituent elements and composing patterns incorporating with many typical samples in Shanghai region, focusing on how to create street living atmosphere from three spatial functions including transportation, social communication and humanistic spirit expression. By analyzing the existing conditions, interpreting theories, drawing lessons from traditional and current domestic residential groups in Shanghai suburb, the paper proposes to summarize the approaches on how to incorporate with physical and spiritual environment of street space in suburban low-density residential areas, as well as provides pertinent comments and recommendations on the creation of overall environment in suburban residential groups.The paper consists of five parts. The introduction focuses on mention of study background, significance and conception. The first chapter presents the definition and content of low-density houses and living areas in suburb incorporating with some successful case studies, mainly addressing on spatial types and characters, and clarifies the core functions and significance of street space in residential areas as well. Chapter 2 details the composition of street space in low-density residential areas, indicates the key roles of each element playing on physical environment creation; Chapter 3 summaries the formation of spatial physical elements from both natural and human perspectives, meanwhile, it also introduces the approaches of creating street living atmosphere through combining with studies of several Shanghai unique characteristic; In order to present the all-sided status of low-density community development (especial in Shanghai) to readers, the appendix introduces the correlative policy about Shanghai low-density districts and the general situation of the residential districts mentioned in this paper.
