As the high-speed development of our national economy and promotion of the urbanization process, the quantity of motor vehicle and traffic volume increase sharply. Therefore, it brings a series of urban transportation problem, such as traffic jam, aggravation of the environment pollution. The urban transportation problem has already become an important problem of influencing urban normal function and city sustainable development now, and it needs to be solved urgently.Using intelligent transportation system (ITS) technology to solve transportation problem has become an important direction in future transportation engineering development. Vehicle navigation system is an important subsystem of ITS. The system can lead vehicle moving in network effectively, reduce the vehicle driving time, and finally realize that the traffic volume distributes equably in whole road network. For realizing real-time navigation, people concern one problem how to carry out dynamic evaluation of road weight in vehicle navigation system. Thus, it is necessary to study evaluation method of road weight based on dynamic vehicle navigation system.The paper firstly reviews studies about evaluation technology of road weight at home and abroad. Then it introduces the research fruit of road weight types, road impedance function model, intersection delay model,and network reliability. Based on these, the paper confirms travel distance, travel time and unblocked reliability as the road weight type of vehicle navigation system.Based on decided road weight type, the paper considers the actual condition of our nation hardware foundation establishment and the development trend of future vehicle navigation system, and presents evaluation project of road weight and relevant road impedance function based on dynamic vehicle navigation system.Through processing and analyzing historical traffic flow data of Beijing road network, the paper confirms the typical traffic mode. According to the different typical traffic mode, the paper confirms different benchmark road weight of vehicle navigation system. The paper considers the research fruit at home and abroad and transportation actuality of Beijing road network, confirms unblocked standards of section and intersection, and presents computation method of unblocked reliability based on statistic theory.
