It is difficult to evaluate the stability of the rock slope with bedding plane ingeotechnical engineering for the reason that rock formations and joints exist in therock mass. Therefore, the computation of the factor of safety(FOS) is a tough job. Inthe paper, UDEC and strengthreduction method are used to calculate the FOS of therock slope with bedding plane, and numerical tests and example applications arepresented.Thepaperisorgnizedinthefollowingform:Chapter 1 introduces the concept of rock slope with bedding planes and the mainmethods in analyzing the slope stability. At the same time, the correspondingachievementsanddeficienciesarealsoreviewed.Chapter 2 describes the basic theory of FLAC (Fast Lagrange Analysis of Continua)and the steps ofstrength reduction method. It shows that strength reduction method isreliable according to some examples. Several factors influencing the strengthreductioncomputationareincluded.Chapter 3 presents the keystoneof DEM (Distinct Element Method) firstly, and thenintroduces how to combine with strength reduction method. Based on this, a numberof simple slope examples illustrates its reliability. At last, several effecting factors onthe slope stability: stiffness coefficient, surface thickness of the rock slope withbeddingplanes, obliquityof the joint surface, parameters of the joint surface, angle inexcavatingslopeetc.arediscussed.Chapter 4 computes FOS of rock mass bedding cutting slopein K148 in the westernpart of the Shanghai-Sichuan highway and analyzes its failure mode. The presentednumericalresultsarereasonable.Chapter 5 presents some main conclusion in this paper and puts forward the furtherstudy.
