Along with the rapid development of modern industry, the demand of bearings in every field is becoming larger and larger, and the request for bearing quality is also higher and higher. Steel balls used as roll object in bearings are the accessories which endure load and are directly relative to the dynamic performance of bearings, so the surface quality of steel ball is one of the important factors to affect bearing's performance. Statistic result of experiments indicated: among bearing failure forms, the ones induced by crack and slit which result from surface defect of steel ball account for 60%. Therefore, surface quality detect of steel ball is especially important.At present domestic factories for steel balls mostly detect surface quality of steel balls with manual visual method. This kind of method has heavy labor intensity as well as low work efficiency, and it is usually affected by detect worker's technical diathesis, experience, eye's resolving ability, tiredness and so on, so automation detect device for steel balls is urgently required.This paper adopted graphics programming language LabVIEW as system software platform, PLC as hardware control kernel, and combined virtual instrument technology and PLC technology to make full use of each advantage, finally developed a set of steel ball surface quality detect instrument.According to the request for steel ball's surface automatic detect, this paper designed integral mechanical structure and control system, organically merging mechanical and electronical parts through computer technology. Mechanical design's objects were mainly whole device's appearance, executive mechanism, driving part and discharging material. Control part mainly consisted of computer and programmable controller (S7-200 CPU224 from SIEMENS company).
