Virtual Reality is one of the newest technology in the field of computer in the 1990s. And it is being applied on architectural design field these years. It is important to keep ancient architecture in digital achieves, protect culture relic and layout modern architecture by VR and computer technology. In this dissertation, with the application to ancient buildings of the Leshan Grand Buddha tourist area and PingDu Sportpark, geometric optimized simplification and texture techniques are proposed and researched in detail, along with the analysis of the general characteristic of ancient and modern architectures. Optimized techniques such as Level of Detail, structure optimization, mapping optimization and texture-baked mapping optimization are researched specially. The optimized technique of modeling is also efficient for large and complicated simulation scene, It becomes an earlier example of large digital tourist area of homeland, and also is a good attempt to combine modern information technique and architecture representation arts. There are three parts of this dissertation. First, the basic concept of VR and review of the present research method of architecture presentation are introduced, it proves that VR is necessary and reliable to represent architecture as a new method. Second, geometrical optimized method and texture optimized method are discussed specially, along with the analysis of characteristic of ancient and modern architectures. In the third part, the exhibition effect of optimized technique proved that the technique proposed in this dissertation is feasible and valid, which is applied in the Grand Leshan Buddha and Olympic Park separately.
