The weak points of some traditional methods (e.g. PLL, DAC etc) used in the development of instruments such as signal generator and voltmeter are first analyzed in the paper. In addition, some valuable user feedback information concerning the improvement of older versions of the relevant instruments discussed here is gathered and analyzed too. After much discussion among the project staff members, DDS technology is chosen in the development of digital signal generator for its special features and high performance. In addition, the paper introduces a way to develop digital voltmeter.Microprocessor of winbond 77E58 is employed as the central processor of the program. It is a highly efficient processor belonging to mono-chip system of 51 series. It offers more external interrupt sources and more timers than the most of its family members. The whole program is written in C51 language and the whole project is developed and debugged in the integral development environment ofμVision 2.Large LCD controller and keyboard controller are used in the project. Menus are provided for easy operations via keyboard. Serial port is so programmed that on-line software update is possible through the connection with computer via serial port. X25045 is used as a watchdog in the project so that program deadlocks are effectively avoided.
