The bridge inspection and evaluation is one of the popular topics in civil engineering. The assessment of active duty bridges is a complicated and difficult job, there are lots of issues need to be solved in this field. In this paper, the assessment methods of bridge carrying capacity are summarized and the advantage and shortcoming of the assessment methods are analysed. The assessment methods of bridge carrying capacity which make use of crack characteristic are presented. In this paper, the carrying condition of reinforced concrete beam is studied as three phases based on the reinforce concrete theory. The main cause of crack in reinforced concrete bridges is summarized. The crack control standards in different country are studied. The crack conditions in every carrying phases are studied based on crack develop theory. According to the experimental result of model girder and statistic analysis the experiential formulas between crack development and carrying capacity are presented. At last, the carrying capacity of one actual bridge was assessed. It is proved that assessing the carrying capacity of bridge with the crack characteristic is feasible and trusty.
