With the development of modern power electronic technology, it is necessary for the history development that AC drive electric locomotive will take place of the traditional DC drive electric locomotive. This paper center around the great trend of Chinese railway development and the practice of locomotive utilization, target the problem that auxiliary inverter is burnt easily; make IGBT drive and protection as research direction. Put forward a new method of IGBT delay search and overflowing protection, design a new IGBT's drive and overflowing protecting circuit. This paper aims at the practice that the inverter is easily burnt in the SS9 electronic power locomotive, analyzed the IGBT structure and character, and deeply talks about the reason that inverter is easily burnt. The research think the main reason that inverter was burnt is that the design of IGBT driving and protecting circuits is irrationality and some parameters are not rightly set up. Further more, the paper analyzed the IGBT driving and protecting circuits for the moment, and compared the principle of IGBT special driving model. With the poor working environment of auxiliary inverter and the character of current disturbance in the SS9 electronic power locomotive, put forward new designs to the IGBT driving circuit and protecting circuit respectively, makes detailed analysis and explanation to the normal working and overflowing protection. The design consideration such as the configuration selection, optimum control and drive circuits were presented. At last, simulating results by using the software of Pspice are given, by analyzing these results, the design of IGBT driving and protecting circuits is successful.
