As the technology of power electronics develops, a lot of non-linear power electronic components are applied widely in the electric power system. The complicacies of electric power system structure also give rise to a series of problem. Among them, the most serious problem is how to reduce power-factor and pollution of harmonic. Power factor being overly low will cause mass waste of electric energy. The existence of harmonic current will possibly lead to harmonic vibration of equipment, which can impair components. Port power system have a lot of non-linear power electronic components. They are low power-factor, and lead to harmonic current. They not only waste power but also bring latency harm. In a word, reactive power compensation and harmonic current restrain have become one of the most important problems.Nowadays, most ports traditionally adopt parallel connected capacitors to compensate reactive power. Although this method can affectively compensate static reactive power, it is not good enough for the dynamic reactive power in the port power system. In addition, this method may cause extra harmonic. Compare to reactive power compensation theory, Harmonic restrain theory developed slower, Because the harm of harmonic is found in the past years, most ports haven't adopt harmonic restrain device, to study dynamic reactive power compensation and harmonic restrain of port power system is of practically importance.This paper thoroughly discussed the effects of reactive power and harmonic, and studied the reactive current and harmonic current with dynamic reactive power theory applied. Based on the accurate survey of reactive current and harmonic current, it then studied the method of dynamic compensation, introduced advanced theory of static var generator and active power filter, and computing according to the circumstances of port. The result of computing is better, and can make it to fact. Finally, it explicated the simulation of dynamic reactive power compensation and harmonic compensation method in MATLAB with simulink simulation library. Result of this simulation indicated that the active power filter designed according to the instantaneous reactive power theory can effectively survey and filter harmonic component to restrain harmonic.
