With the rapid development of Chinese railway information technology, and the increasing complexity of the locomotive system itself, it is difficult for the traditional fault diagnosis to complete the railway locomotive state maintenance, therefore, the reliability and safety of locomotive is required highly. Under such circumstances, this paper propose a remote locomotive fault diagnosis system which uses internet as media, the system uses experts' knowledge in this field and knowledge-based diagnostic organon to carry out locomotive fault diagnosis, assisting drivers and maintenance person to diagnose, locate and eliminate the faults. Under this design ideas, we have developed a locomotive fault detection device to record locomotive fault information, accumulated parameters information and state information, and transmit the data to the ground control system through the wireless methods to monitor locomotive's running state real-time, and collect information and establish database, according to the information in the database to carry out the locomotive fault diagnosis, locate fault position accurately and determine the cause of fault.Based on the understanding of basic concepts and principles of fault diagnosis in this paper, we analyses the feasibility of locomotive fault diagnosis using Fault Tree Analysis, Fuzzy Diagnosis Method, Neural Networks Method and Expert System. In view of the locomotive's characteristics, we put a main idea of the remote fault diagnosis system of locomotive and establish a model of fault diagnosis system. As a wide distribution of locomotive, it is difficult to collect, send and store information to the ground control center, we use GPRS wireless communication technology for hardware design, hardware can transmit information immediately to the ground control center by GPRS module, meanwhile, the system has GPS positioning function, the ground control center can know the locomotive location by software, the ground control software is programmed in Delphi language, the software functions include sending, receiving locomotive data and displaying the data on the control interface, meanwhile, the software can classifies data and store in database, which provides accordance for the fault diagnosis of locomotive.Through several testing and debugging, the system realized functions of hardware and software.
