Though analyzing the fire characteristics of large-space Exhibition & Conference buildings and combined with the work experiences, the performance-based fire protection evaluations were performed on a large-space Exhibition & Conference building. Aiming at the existing typical problems for this type of buildings, by setting the fire safety goals, determining the performance criteria, establishing the fire scenarios and considering uncertain factors, the safety evacuation time for occupants, smoke movement and spread, radiant fluxes etc. were numerically calculated by utilizing developed engineering methodologies. Results indicate that the adoption of methods that are at least equivalent to those prescribed in current national standards and codes for large space buildings can realize the fire safety goals and resolve the problems resulting from certain unsuitable regulations or the conflicts between the actual requirements and the existing standards. On the basis of the numerical simulation and quantitative analyses, the fire compartments of the large-space Exhibition & Conference buildings can be divided by one exhibition hall, and the dynamic fire compartments can be established by the fire compartmentation strips inside the exhibition hall. In the occupant evacuation design, the amounts of safety evacuation exits should be increased and the evacuation corridors should be widened surrounding the buildings. The amounts and the widths of the exits and the distances of the evacuation paths can be validated and determined according to the numerically calculated results of the occupant safety evacuation time, smoke temperature, descendent height, CO concentration and visibility.
